Frequently Asked Questions

What is counselling?

Counselling is a collaborative process where a trained therapist helps individuals, couples, or families work through emotional, psychological, or behavioural challenges. In a counselling session, you can expect a safe, non-judgmental space where you’ll explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences, gaining insight into patterns and developing coping strategies. Your therapist will collaborate with you to set actionable goals, introduce helpful techniques, and support your growth in a way that aligns with your unique values and needs.

How do I know if I need counselling?

You might consider counselling if you're feeling overwhelmed, struggling with a specific issue (e.g., anxiety, depression, relationship challenges), or simply want support in understanding yourself, your past, or aligned your future goals with your unique values. Senja believes there is always something to learn from counselling and this is why she has accessed services herself for years. If you are unsure if counselling is the next best step for you, consider booking a free 20-minute consult to get insight into whether it is the right fit.

What does the first session look like?

In our first session, I’ll introduce myself, share a bit about my approach, and review important information like confidentiality and cancellation policies. From there, we begin wherever you feel most comfortable. I don’t require a formal intake with your detailed history - what is important will come up naturally. Whether you’d like to start by sharing impactful moments from your past or jump straight into what’s currently causing distress, disruption, or disconnection, I’m happy to meet you where you are.

What if I don't know what to say?

It’s completely okay to come to a session and not know what to say or where to start - many folks feel this way! I can help guide the conversation with gentle questions, and we can take our time finding a starting point together. I often find that sessions without a clear presenting problem are the ones that lead to the most meaningful insight.

How do I know if counselling is helping?

Often the effects of counselling show up in subtle ways: feeling more aware, responding differently to situations, or noticing shifts in patterns. We will celebrate all progress together in session, big or small. If you’re not finding sessions helpful or “productive,” I encourage you to share this during or between sessions. I will always do my best to adjust our approach or provide a personalized referral if I am not able to meet your needs.

How do in-person counselling sessions work?

In-person counselling sessions are in my rented office spaces in either Kelowna (205-1855 Kirschner Rd.) or West Kelowna (8-2483 Main St). Both spaces have free parking in a designated lot and are walking distance (5 minutes) from public transit. More information - including a virtual tour and photos of the space - can be found under counselling > offices page.

How do virtual counselling sessions work?

Virtual sessions are conducted via secure video conferencing (via JaneApp) or phone calls. You will receive an email providing clear instructions on how to access your session, ensuring it’s as smooth and convenient as possible. With virtual sessions it is important to consider the environment in regard to privacy and comfort. Senja is happy to support you in navigating these barriers.

How long are sessions and what do they cost?

Most counselling sessions are 50 minutes, though longer sessions can be arranged if needed. Session costs range from $150-170 per session depending on the type of services. Flexible sliding scale prices are considered on a case by case basis as detailed in the pricing section of the website. These details can be found under counselling > services & pricing.

How frequently should I attend sessions?

Session frequency is highly individualized. Many people start with weekly or bi-weekly sessions when there is a clear concern or challenge. Over time, as goals are met or difficulties ease, we often taper frequency. Some people continue with monthly “maintenance” sessions or occasional drop-ins for a tune-up. The “right” frequency is the one that is most supportive for you.

Do you offer sliding scale reduced rates?

Senja Wellness offers up to three sliding scale spots for clients experiencing financial constraints that make the standard fee a barrier to care. Decisions about fee reduction are made collaboratively, considering your current life circumstances and the availability of sliding scale spaces at the time of inquiry. Proof of income is not required. If you’re interested, you are welcome to reach out via email or an initial consult call to discuss current availability. The reduced rate range is $90–$120 per 50-minute individual counselling session. Asking about sliding scale will not affect your access to services at the standard rate.

Can I use my extended health benefits?

Senja Wellness offers direct billing for many extended health plans including Manulife, Sun Life, Canada Life, and others available through TELUS eClaims. Coverage varies by policy and provider designation (RSW, RCC, or CCC), so we encourage you to confirm your plan details and connect with us in advance. If your insurer is not set up for direct billing, all receipts contain the full professional credentials for you to submit to your extended health provider for reimbursement. If you are needing support finding a registered professional that aligns with your benefit plan, Senja is happy to use her network to make recommendations.

What is your cancellation policy?

To respect counsellor's time, the industry standard of 24-hours notice to cancel or reschedule your appointment is requested. If a session is cancelled within the 24-hour window and is NOT due to extenuating circumstances (emergencies or sudden illness), the cancellation fee of the full session price may be applied.

What are all the letters behind a counsellors name?

The most common letters designate the education a counsellor has obtained and an association they have registered with. At this time, British Columbia does not have a college regulating the field of counselling, therapy, or psychotherapy so all associations are voluntary but some are more widely acknowledged. Voluntary registration provides regulation and ensures adhere to a protective code of ethics. Many counsellors include their education initials behind their name. These typically begin with M designating a Masters graduate degree. Common ones are an MSW (Master of Social Work), MACP (Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology), or a MC (Masters in Counselling). The other letters inform what regulatory body they have voluntarily associated with. The ones most commonly recognized by extended health benefits and insurance are CCC (Canadian Certified Counsellor), RCC (Registered Clinical Counsellor), and RSW (Registered Social Worker). Senja has a Master in Social Work (MSW) and is a Registered Social Worker (RSW), Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC), and Certified Clinical Counsellor (CCC).
